Prof. Ratnottama Das is a Professor in the Department of Indian Languages and Literary Studies at the University of Delhi. Along with teaching and guiding research scholars, Dr. Das has been associated with fieldwork-based indigenous-lore (folklore) studies since 2006, and in this connection, she has visited and stayed in many interior indigenous villages of Assam, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Sikkim and Kalimpong (West Bengal), Manipur etc. Particularly, she has been working on the culture and lore of the Lepcha tribe of Kalimpong.
Prof. Das started her primary education in Narayanpur, Lakhimpur district of Assam and completed her formal education at Cotton College, Gauhati University and the University of Delhi. She completed her Ph.D. under the guidance of Prof. P. C. Pattanaik.
Prof. Das has total 10 published books to her credit till now. She is a creative writer with three critically acclaimed novels published in Assamese till now. Her first novel, Hariguna Kahana Najaai is a mythological novel which was honoured as the special book of the year by Jeevan, Guwahati. The adaptation of her social novel Segun pator kunhi as an Assamese TV serial under the same name, with more than 100 episodes, was telecasted on Rang Channel. The serial was appreciated by the critics and embraced overwhelmingly by the audiences. Her recent novel Arbaaseen is considered to be the first dystopian novel written in Assamese. Bookmark (A collection of articles on books and authors), Poharar tulika, sagarar parot eta gharar xapon aru Raveendran Sir (A collection of of write-ups) and Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi- Assamese Echo from the Hills of Arunachal (A book written in English, on the life and works of Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi) are three of her recent published works.
Prof. Das received the “Travel Grant for Young Authors” by Sahitya Akademi in the year 2016. A known newspaper columnist in Assam, Dr. Das writes two fortnightly columns in two reputed Assamese daily. One is “Abyaktigata” in “Niyomiya barta” and the other is “Ityadi” in “Dainik Janambhumi”.
Apart from being an academician and a writer, Dr. Das is a translator too. Her recent translation of “Baghrani Khairi” (Originally in Odia, by Akhil Mohan Pattanaik) was published monthly by “Anyajug” and later published in a book form. She has also translated Children Book for NBT from English and Hindi to Assamese. She writes short stories, novellas and articles regularly in newspapers, journals and literary magazines. Dr. Das has a keen interest in paintings.
