Quantifying the total ecosystem level carbon sequestration potential of different forest ecosystem along an elevational gradient in Uttarakhand, Western Himalaya in different climate scenarios | Major | 2021 | Tropical Shorea robusta dominant forest has the highest total biomass density (1280.79 Mg ha-1) and total carbon density (577.77 Mg C ha-1) along with the highest total species richness (21 species). In the present study, the stem density ranged between 153 – 457 trees ha-1 with large trees (> 70 cm diameter) contributing 0 – 22%. Conifer dominant forest types had higher median diameter and Cedrus deodara forest had the highest growing stock (718.87 m3 ha-1) furthermore, C. deodara contributed maximally towards total carbon density (14.6%) amongst all the 53 species combined. Quercus semecarpifolia – Rhododendron arboreum association forest had the highest total basal area (94.75 m2 ha-1). We found large trees to contribute up to 65% of the growing stock in our study. More than 50% of the carbon stock was contributed by Just 9% of the species contributed more than 50% of the carbon stock. Species dominance was found to significantly regulated the growing stock significantly (R2: 0.707, p<0.001). Temperate forest types had heterogeneous biomass distribution within the forest stands. We found total basal area, large tree density, maximum diameter, species richness, and species diversity as the predominant variables with a significant positive influence on biomass carbon stock. Both structural attributes and diversity influenced the ordination of study sites under PCA analysis. Elevation showed no significant correlation with either biomass or species diversity components. The results suggest biomass hyperdominance with both selection effects and niche complementarity to play a complex mechanism in enhancing Central Himalayan biomass carbon stock. Major climax forests are in an alarming state regarding future carbon security. Large trees and selective species though act as key regulators of biomass stocks however, species diversity also has a positive influence and should also reflect under management implications. | 14-02-2017 To 13-02-2021 (3 years, 11 months, 30 days)
The Dynamics of Soil Carbon sequestration in the Ridge Forest Ecosystem of Delhi NCT | Major | 2016 | This study concludes that seasonality prevailing in Delhi Ridge significantly influenced MBC and enzymatic activities. All the studied microbiological processes (except β-glucosidase activity) were higher in the monsoon season because of optimum moisture and temperature. This can also be observed by a significant positive correlation of MBC and enzymatic activity (dehydrogenase and phenol oxidase) with soil moisture, which is considered an important factor controlling soil processes occurring in semi-arid conditions. The enzymes considered in our study were involved in C-cycle. Thus, it is important to understand the C dynamics in such semi-arid forests. The study also focused on the correlation between enzyme activities and soil respiration, and a significant positive correlation of enzymatic activities (Dehydrogenase and Phenol oxidase) suggested that they play a significant role in soil respiration studies. This study enlarges the knowledge about different microbiological processes and their dynamics which are important in understanding their role in C-cycling and C dynamics in semi-arid ecosystems. Although semi-arid land plays a small role in carbon dynamics globally, it represents one-third of terrestrial habitat and is thus sensitive to large- scale environmental changes. This project also evaluated soil carbon stock variations in India's semi-arid forests under different moisture regimes. Soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil inorganic carbon (SIC) stocks were determined in different moisture regimes i.e. monsoon, post-monsoon, winter and pre-monsoon seasons at 0-10 and >10-20 cm depths. SOC stock showed significant variations under different moisture regimes. The highest SOC stock was during winter (22.81 Mg C ha-1) and the lowest during the monsoon season (2.34 Mg C ha-1) among all the ridge forests under study. SOC and SIC stock under different moisture regimes showed a significant negative correlation with soil moisture (p<0.05), as a sudden increase in soil moisture after rainfall results in an increase in carbon loss due to microbial decomposition of accumulated carbon during the dry period. There was an increase in annual SOC stock and a decrease (or no change in some cases), in SIC stock at both depths during the study period. The SOC and SIC sequestration rates were estimated as any increase/decrease in the respective stock each year. SOC sequestered ranged between 0.046 to 0.741 Mg C ha-1y-1. Similarly, SIC sequestration ranged between 0.013 to 0.023 Mg C ha-1y-1 overall ridge forests up to 20 cm depth. The Delhi ridge forests, which are 0.007% of the semi-arid regions of India, contribute 0.25–0.32% of the national potential (semi-arid region) for SOC sequestration up to 20 cm depth. The estimates of the rate of C sequestration in this study provide a realistic image of carbon dynamics under present climatic conditions of semi-arid forests and could be used in developing a database and formulating new strategies for carbon dioxide mitigation by enhancing soil C sequestration rates. | 01-11-2013 To 31-10-2016 (2 years, 11 months, 30 days)
